Franciscan Monastery of Saint Clare Green Building Tour

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The Franciscan Monastery of Saint Clare is the first monastery in the United States  to be awarded LEED certification.  Located on 14 acres in the Upstate,of South Carolina, the new Monastery is a one-story structure that features two courtyards offering views to exterior gardens. The monaster takes advantage of  these natural views and the natural  lighting throughout the majority of the building.  The Monasterywas designed to significantly reduce water consumption through the installation of high efficiency, low-flow water closets, lavatories, and shower fixtures.   The project site was designed to feature a sustainable landscape planted with native and adaptive plant material. A  temporary drip irrigation system currently in use will be decommissioned after plantings are established, and 75% of the site has been restored to provide habitat and promote biodiversity.

The tour will start with everyone gathered in the Chapel for an introduction to the project by Sisters Nancy and Cathy,  residents and Owner’s representatives, during design and construction.
Three groups will be formed for a tour of the public facilities and grounds with discussion of LEED credits earned and lost. For those ordering a box lunch, the Hospitality room and grounds will be available for people to gather, eat and socialize.
