Introduction to Environmental Life Cycle Assessment
Begins: 12:00 pm
Ends: 1:30 pm; August 21, 2014
Location: CBI, 205 E. Broad St. Greenville
Description: To date, the LEED Rating System and the building materials market have only been able to address the sustainable characteristics of building products in very rudimentary ways, such as tracking their recycled content or their place of extraction and manufacturing. However, a powerful new tool, Environmental Life‐Cycle Assessment (LCA), is being deployed in the new LEED v4 Rating System to help design teams assess just how sustainable their building materials really are. Through LCA, design teams can have access to metrics that show exactly how building material solutions impact the environment on a number of levels including their embodied energy, global climate change impacts, and how they impact human respiratory health. This presentation will include an overview of the basic principles of LCA, how LCA was addressed in LEED 2009’s Innovation and Design Pilot Credits, and how LCA is included in LEED v4. This will include an examination of both Whole‐Building LCA’s and LCA as a part of material and assembly scale Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s).
